the Friday edition - the one after Vegas

February 21, 20252 min read

I've just spent the week in Las Vegas for a conference on the sports industry. It was a great amount of fun and learning, and there was an award - something I'll talk about next week!

For now, let's talk odds.

Whether you’re at the blackjack table, spinning a roulette wheel, or just watching someone put it all on red, there’s a constant underlying question: What are my chances of winning?

Marketing isn’t much different. Every tactic you choose has its own set of odds—some are strategic, others are pure luck, and a few are like those “too good to be true” bets that drain your stack before you even know what happened.

Take email marketing. It’s the blackjack of the marketing world—predictable, based on skill, and if you play it right, your odds of success are incredibly strong. Meanwhile, social media? That’s more like the slot machines—sometimes you hit, but there's a bit of pulling the lever and hoping. And let’s be honest, throwing money at ads without a real strategy off of organic wins? That’s just handing your chips over to the house.

The key is knowing where to place your bets. Some tactics are worth doubling down on, while others are best left to those willing to burn through cash for the thrill of it.

How is your marketing strategy paying out?

Email Marketing - have 40 minutes to get some tips?

I was a guest on a recent podcast to talk about it through the lens of my sports business. The audience is those traveling for the annual conference and growing sports businesses, but the lessons apply to anyone running email campaigns. You can listen here or pass it along to whoever leads your marketing.
